Are bananas on the brink of extinction?

Look out, all you banana-loving beauties! A scary disease is threatening to wipe out banana crops all over the world, which could end up leaving you without your beloved fruit.

The-Scientist.com recently reported that a virus known as Race 4 is threatening the variety of bananas found in grocery stores across the country, known as Cavendish Bananas. Apparently, this isn’t the first disease that has threatened beloved bananas.

Years ago, the Gros Michel variety of bananas were taken off the market due to an infection known as Race 1, or Panama Disease. With this new disease spreading throughout banana crops around the globe, what are scientists doing to save our fave fruit?

Sadly, right now, there is no cure for Race 1. The only thing that can be done to stop Cavendish Bananas from going extinct is to keep them isolated and out of harm’s way so that the virus cannot reach them. Scientists are also working to genetically alter this type of banana so that it can fight off the disease if it happens to hit.

Our fingers are crossed for all the gals out there that are b-a-n-a-n-a-s for bananas. Hopefully, this won’t be the end of the banana era!
