Grieving For Grandpa

My grandfather just passed away at a very young age. He was super close to my mom and she's really depressed. My dad works all day, and my mom pushes herself really hard. Because she's so – well, I don't know what she is, but she's angry – she constantly yells at me and makes fun of me.

I already have low self-confidence, but this makes me feel worse. What can I do? No one seems to care that I miss my grandfather, too!

-Want to Die, Too

Hey chica,

I’m really sorry to hear that your grandfather passed away at a young age. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you to cope with this while dealing with your mom’s emotions as well. I want you to know that my thoughts are with.

Before you try to help your mom, there is one thing you have to remember: cherish the memories you made with your grandfather and remember that he is at a better place watching over you. I know it's tough, girl, but think of all the positive ways that your grandfather impacted your life.

As for your mom, she may be yelling at you and making fun of you just to find a distraction that lets her forget her pain of losing a family member. Of course, this is NOT the best way to deal with her sorrow, especially when you're sad, too.

It’s going to be really hard, but you have to open up to your mom and tell her how this is making you feel. You can't keep this all bottled up, babe. Be honest and say that her actions are negatively affecting you.

After you tell her your feelings, let her know that although she might have lost someone, you are there for her to get through this hard time with her. Comfort her and make sure she feels safe and cared for. When she sees that you want to help her, she’ll find the strength to care for you as well. It will take some time to truly recover from this event, but always know that you’re never alone.
