How to layer your outfits this winter (and look good doing it)
We know: As winter drags on, it may be tempting to put on a hoodie with sweatpants and call it a day.
Yes, looking fashionable when it's beyond freezing outside is hard—but we're here to help by way of layering.
Layering doesn't just keep you warm, but it's also a way to express your unique style (and hopefully, get you excited about the cold weather). Read on for some cozy 'n' stylish tips...
Start with neutral colors
The foundation of any great outfit lies in the basics. Begin with a well-fitted turtleneck or a long-sleeved thermal as your base layer. Opt for neutral colors like black, white or beige (this makes it easy to mix and match with other pieces!). For milder winter days, consider a thinner turtleneck. This lets you have a comfortable base without adding bulk.
Add a sweater
Your second layer = a stylish sweater. Chunky knits, knitted vests, cable patterns or even a trendy oversized cardigan can instantly bring texture to your winter look. Choosing vibrant colors or patterns can make a bold statement, but there's also nothing wrong with sticking to the classic colors as well.
Dresses and skirts
Who says dresses and skirts are only for summer? Layer them over your turtleneck for an elevated look. Pair a spaghetti-strapped dress with fleece tights, knee-high boots and outerwear for a winter-ready ensemble.
Experiment with jackets and coats
The top layer is all about outerwear. Depending on the weather, throw on a chic leather jacket, a tailored blazer or a classic trench coat. The key is to find a piece that complements your outfit while keeping you warm.
Play with textures
Make your layers interesting by incorporating different textures. Mix and match fabrics like denim, wool, faux fur or corduroy for a visually appealing ensemble. Textured layers add depth and dimension to your winter look.
Accessorize, accessorize, and accessorize!
The most important way to give your outfits a new feel is with accessories. Plus, hats, scarves and gloves add another touch of warmth. A chunky scarf or just a plain black beanie can effortlessly enhance your winter wardrobe. So chic!
