Your official guide to rainy day style

Rainy days can bring the *coziest* vibes. (Curled up in a coffee shop with a good book and a cinnamon latte, watching the rain through the window? Yes, pls.)

But the thing about rain is that it can totally mess with your fit, makeup and hair (especially for those of us wavy- or curly-haired girlies who have trouble keeping the frizz down).

Don't fret—we've listed our top tips for surviving a rainy day with your style in tact, so you can live out your dark academia rain aesthetic dreams stress-free!

Tip 1: Put your hair up

@aidabadji_

If your hair is kinky or curly, you already know that humidity can wreak havoc. And even if you're a straight-haired girlie, walking out and about in the rain and wind can leave your hair a total mess. The easiest (and cutest!) solution is to pull up your hair into a cute pony, braid or bun on your way out the door. (And spritz on a smoothing hair product, like Trader Joe's Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Serum, $5, to tame the frizz even more.) If you like leaving your hair down to keep your neck warm, take this as your sign to accessorize with a cute scarf.

Tip 2: Wear long, thick socks

@hunterboots

Rainy days call for soft, cozy clothes, and long socks are both stylish and practical. If you're wearing rain boots and jeans but your ankles are bare, you might get cold, and rain can seep in through the tops of your shoes. (Uh, no fun.) To stay warm, dry and stylish, wear a pair of long socks in a bright color or wintry pattern (bonus points if you have a hat or a scarf to match).

Tip 3: Use an umbrella to keep makeup intact

@borntobesassyboutique

If you've ever been out in the rain with a full face before, you know that a downpour can melt your makeup right off. To keep your dewy look perfect, opt for an umbrella over a hooded rain jacket to keep the water off your face—or even forego the eye makeup altogether if the forecast calls for rain. Stick with a bright lip or bold blush instead (they're more likely to survive a bit of moisture).

Tip 4: Carry a zippered bag

@sarahestyleme

There is *nothing* worse than throwing your books, laptop and an important school document or two in your bag, walking three blocks in the rain and opening it up to find your papers completely drenched. If you like keeping your things in a tote bag, look for one with a zipper on top so the items in your bag aren't exposed to the rain when you walk outside. Or bring your school backpack to your Saturday morning cafe study sesh (just make sure the material is water-resistant!).

Tip 5: Wear waterproof shoes

@nataliezacek

We know, your brand new boots are so cute. And they would be perfect, except that they're not supposed to go out in the rain. On a day with a downpour in the forecast, make sure you opt for a pair of rubber rain boots or water-resistant sneakers instead. Not only will waterproof footwear keep your feet dry (because wet socks = totally unpleasant), but it's also easy to rinse off in the sink if you step in a big puddle and your shoes get dirty.
