Where did it originate?
Even though the trend has just made its way over to America, its European roots have been around for decades. Specifically, the style comes from Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden and the largest urban area of Scandinavia. Stockholm is made up of 14 islands with more than 50 connecting bridges. No matter which island you're on, you're surrounded by the gorgeous waterfront of Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. The town has a coastal chic feel—while still giving historic European vibes.

What is Stockholm Style?
Stockholm is known for its museums, art galleries, cafes and waterfront promenades. Most residents walk as their main mode of transportation, which means their clothing has to be both stylish *and* practical. Translation: The fashion landscape is very minimalist, clean and modern.

Swedes usually have a wardrobe that they can easily mix and match to create chic outfits, stat. They usually stray away from complicated silhouettes and flashy patterns, opting for basic colors instead. As for the clothing itself, pants such as loose-fitting jeans, flowy skirts and linen trousers along with basic T-shirts, knit sweaters and blouses are staple pieces in any Stockholm wardrobe.

Because it's right on the water, Stockholm's seasons are relatively mild. The temperature never gets too warm, so layers are your best friend—and many residents suggest carrying a small sweater for any sudden summer chill.

How do I achieve Stockholm style?
There are four basic elements of any Stockholm wardrobe: color, fabric, accessories and aesthetic. These elements intertwine to create this summer's must-have aesthetic. If you are unsure where to begin, start your shopping with these recs...

Colors
One of the main elements of Stockholm fashion is the basic color palette and lack of flashy, complicated patterns. Maritime colors are key in the Swedish city (think: different shades of blue, cream and white). However, other staple hues such as black, brown and gray are also perfect (with the occasional pop of muted pink or green).

Opt for simple patterns such as pinstripes and tile-esque designs to get the effortless, coastal look.

Footwear also follows these guidelines: Ugg slippers, white sneakers and Golden Goose tennis shoes are super cute.

Fabric and Fit
The fabric of Stockholm fashion is practical and comfortable—perfect for running in and out of shops and exploring museums. For pants, denim and linen are very popular, with the fit being mid to low rise and often straight or wide leg. Additionally, black, loose-fitting, business casual trousers are a must-have.

As for tops, T-shirts, tank tops and long sleeves are usually on the tighter side. Necklines are also super simple: U-shape, square or V-neck. Most are made of light cotton or ribbed material. Additionally, fancier tops feature fun one-shoulder or strapless necklines—and sometimes ruffles.

We've said it once and we'll say it again: Layers are a huge essential to any Stockholm wardrobe. An oversized pinstriped or plain white linen button-down is perfect for throwing on over any summer outfit or even layering with a sweater (a key component of Stockholm fashion is a cozy, knit sweater).

Accessories
Both gold and silver jewelry are elements of Stockholm style. Additionally, a quality cross-body or shoulder bag are a good investment. And just like the rest of the aesthetic, accessories typically land on the more minimalist side for practicality.

Aesthetic
Trying to put the Stockholm aesthetic into words is difficult. On one hand, it's practical, minimalist and business casual. On the other hand, it's cozy, coastal and preppy. However, a good rule of thumb is the trying-but-not-trying look. Yes, you have this amazingly curated closet that you can mix and match with ease. But you're also giving off an effortlessly relaxed impression.
