Britt Robertson: All in the fam

Imagine being a teen, spending your entire life bouncing between foster homes. Wanting to become a legally emancipated minor, you stumble upon the bar doorstep of your birth father (who doesn’t even know you exist), later discovering your birth mom is a radio personality you’ve listened to for as long as you can remember.

Meet Lux, the focal point of the new CW series LifeUneXpected (premiering this Monday, Jan. 18, at 9/8 p.m. c). And while her life mimics this very description, finding her biological parents might help give her the family she deserves. Buzzed to be the next Gilmore Girls, we were intrigued to catch the pilot episode to see just how good this series will be. Well, we watched, and admit it’s going to be an addicting and a truly touching show.
Speaking of families, what’s life really like for the stars of the show? We caught up with 19-year-old Britt Robertson, who plays Lux, and had her dish on her own clan. What makes her mom so great? What does she love most about her BFF? Read on to find out…

Fond Memories
“We have a mirror [in our trailers] with lights and stuff so I tape pictures of my room and bed, my stuffed animals that I didn’t bring with me, my mom and family. I think all of us do this actually because Shiri [Appleby] has the same thing. Also, my best friend made me this collage of pictures of my friends and me right before I left at my going away party. [That’s in there, too].”

Home is Where the Heart is
Britt’s originally from South Carolina. So what’s it like visiting home when not busy working on the west coast? “I go home maybe twice a year, so when I go home, I cherish every single second that I have with my family,” she says. “It’s this amazing feeling, like happiness and gratitude and warmth. I just love the simple things like eating southern comfort food. We don’t have [food] like that in L.A. so it’s nice to go home and have my family cook for me.”

Mom Knows Best
“I was on the phone with my mom today and she said, ‘No matter how much you want something and you think that it’s unreachable, keep going for it no matter how hard things may be.’ Yeah, she’s a smart cookie.”

The Sweetest Thing
“For Mother’s Day last year, I hooked [my mom] up with a nice spa visit: a mani, pedi, massage, facial and she got her hair done. I have a bunch of younger brothers and sisters so she never really gets to chill out. It was just kind of a day to herself to relax. I had a chauffer come pick her up. She loved it.”

Sister, Sister
Britt’s the oldest of seven kids. But what advice does she give her three younger sisters on boys? “I have a sister who’s almost 16. She’s in it for the boys and dates right now and has, you know, crushes. The best thing that I have ever said to her that I really hope she listens to is to just respect yourself. No matter how pressurized school or the atmosphere can be, the best thing you can do is respect yourself. You know you’ll never regret that.”

Friends for Life
“My favorite thing about my best friend is her gut. She’s crazy. She’s super spontaneous and fun and is always down to do anything. But she’s [also] the most compassionate, loving, person I’ve ever met. She’s always doing things for other people, putting others first. That has always been super inspiring to me. She’s a good one!”

Be sure to catch Britt in LifeUneXpected, premiering this Monday, Jan. 18, on The CW.
