Scared of public speaking? Here's how to combat the nerves
Ahh public speaking...almost everyone's worst nightmare. And while we wouldn't blame you if the thought of giving a speech makes you jittery, speaking in front of a crowd is something we all have to do at some point. Fortunately, there are ways to cope with the nerves. We've got you covered with tips and tricks for radiating nothing but confidence the next time you need to make your voice heard.
Prep and practice
Before the speech, make sure to prep as much as you can. Practice the speech in the mirror, to your fam, to your cat...whatever you do, just make sure you recite it so much that it becomes second nature. If you know your stuff, you should have nothing to worry about.
Challenge negative thoughts
If you find yourself spiraling down a rabbit hole of worry weeks before the speech, challenge your thoughts. When you find your inner critic screaming nonsense like, "You'll mess up" or "You'll fall in front of everyone," try to remind yourself that it's highly unlikely. And even if it does happen, it won't be the end of the world, trust.
Manifest good things
PSA: Manifesting works. Once you visualize your speech/presentation going well, chances are it'll happen IRL. Try a quick manifestation video, or journal as if your speech already happened and went perfectly. Trust us, you'll be glad you did.
Dress confidently
Wear whatever makes you feel like you, bc dressing for others is never the vibe. If you wear what makes you feel good (whether that's something super fancy or a little more casual), it'll be impossible not to radiate total confidence!
Think ahead
Make sure to think ahead (i.e. go to the bathroom and eat a light but filling meal right before). And *please* get to bed early the night before to avoid any awkward situations (tripping because you're exhausted? So not the vibe). And, of course, remember to bring your emotional support water bottle and a printed copy of your speech. Better safe than sorry!
Find a friendly face
Once you're up in front the crowd, it may seem like there's little left in your control—or is there? If you feel your palms sweating or your body shaking, take a few grounding breaths and look out into the crowd to find a friend or family member. Chances are, it'll give you all the confidence and good vibes you need to make it through.
