How to cope with driving anxiety

If learning how to drive is on your bucket list, you're def not alone. After all, driving yourself anywhere from school to the mall seems like something that can make feel you mature and independent.

But, tbh, driving can be really scary, especially when you're a new driver. Whether you're prepping for your road test or are patiently awaiting the day you're old enough to drive, it's important to accept that getting behind the wheel is a big responsibility—and it's also important to learn how to stay calm behind the wheel. If you're terrified of driving, we've got you covered with tips to beat those driving nerves.

Use affirmations

Whenever you feel the nerves start to come, repeat affirmations. One idea? Repeating "I am in control" in your head or even out loud while you drive. Those simple words can be a total game changer, and this simple reminder you that you're in complete control of the car (after all, you *literally* have the power to steer) can ease those driving nerves.

Meditate

Taking just five minutes before getting behind the wheel to take some deep breaths can make you feel at least a little calmer when you drive. Releasing stress all starts with your breathing, so close your eyes and hone into your breaths.

Start small

The only way to become a better driver? Practice the small stuff first (think: doing loops around a local neighborhood) to work your way up to the bigger, scarier things (like driving on the main road). And ofc, don't forget to be proud of yourself! Being able to drive up and down the block might not seem worthy of celebration, but it's still important to give yourself credit for how far you've come.

Know the rules

Safe driving = knowing the rules of the road and applying them. And if you follow all of them to the best of your ability? You have nothing to worry about. If you're on the road, you've earned that privilege by passing your permit test, so you truly do know more about driving than you may credit yourself for. If you still feel like you may need to brush up on a few rules, doing some extra research before your next time driving can never hurt.

Reach out to an experienced driver

Sometimes, the best thing to do is to lean on the more experienced drivers in your life for advice. Does parallel parking terrify you? Ask an older sib how they learned. Confused about a certain rule? Ask a parent. Trust us, they've been in the same position—and chances are, they'd be happy to help.
