Girl Talk: Love Is Blind
O.K., I’m NOT racist or anything, but I’m white and I have a huge crush on this black guy. My friend teases me all the time because of it, too. She says, “I think that it’s really wrong for white people to like like black people. It’s just not right.” and more comments like that. It really hurts my feelings; please tell me what to do.

Hey Emily,
It’s really a shame that your friend feel that way. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who share the same attitude and beliefs in this world. Let me begin by assuring you there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a crush on someone of a different race, ethnicity, religion, or background. It’s really beautiful that you are able to look beyond the color of a person’s skin and appreciate him for who he really is on the inside as well.
However, that doesn’t mean liking or dating someone of another race is going to be easy. I was a part of an interracial couple for a while and sometimes we would receive some pretty rude comments and stares. But if you really like the person, you need to follow your heart.
People are going to say some mean things, but you have to hold your head up high and try not to let them bother you. It’s not your fault they are ignorant and judgmental. There’s no reason for you to stop liking this guy. If you really like him, you two should hang out sometime and get to know each other better. There is no rule saying you can only like people of your own race.
Lots of love,
L’Oreal
