LIFE

Dear Carol

Bummed 'cause I didn't make the cut...and my buds did

There is a group at my school called peer leaders. You have to try out for it and it is kind of hard to get into. Peer leaders teach sixth graders about alcohol, drugs and other stuff. Last week, I tried out and I was the only one of my friends who did not get in.

Literally, the only one. This fall, my friends will all go to school early to help the sixth graders get to their classes and now that’s all they ever talk about. I try to forget about it, but it was a big disappointment not to get in.

Dear Not a Peer Leader,

Ouch. I’m sorry this didn’t work out, but you’ll find lots of other ways to shine, I promise. Think about which skills you want to develop and which gifts you want to offer. Can you picture yourself on a debate team or sports team or in Model U.N. or math club? If you like theater, you can act or sing or dance or make costumes or build sets or be a stage manager. The school newspaper also needs editors, reporters, and photographers. Opportunities abound, and it may not be so terrible to get some extra sleep those first few mornings and to get to school with lots of energy. Then instead of helping younger kids, you can hang out with kids your own age. That has its plus side too. For now, enjoy summer vacation!
