Killer Summer Workouts!
Wanna mix up your exercise routine before swim season? We hear ya, girl. This summer, ditch the gym and challenge yourself to some tough-as-nails outdoor workouts.
Whether you rent some kayaks on vacay or exercise at the crack o’ dawn with your girlies, it’s all about being active right this second.
Get a Medicine Ball
Bored with traditional weights? Adding a medicine ball to your workout ups the ante and switches up your routine. Medicine balls aren’t expensive ($15, Target) and many come with how-tos. Some of our fast faves? Increase your arm strength by tossing a weighted ball around with a friend (not inside, obvi) and power up your legs by holding one while you do squat jumps. Feel the burn, babe.
Imitate P.E. Class
We chatted up trainer Ashley Conrad recently, and she said moves inspired by old-school gym class exercises are tops for shaping up f-a-s-t. Tech-y shape-up methods might be great, but you can get the same benefits from sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and jumping jacks. Throw in some sprints and you’ve got it made in the shade.
Try Summer-Only Exercises
Hightailing toward the water this vacay? Use it to get your workout in. Canoeing and kayaking are great ways to burn calories, and tone your body. About ten minutes paddling of in a canoe or kayak burns about 40 calories. The motions also work your core and upper body muscles, so you get the cardio and the toning all in one.
Start a Boot Camp
If your girlies are fit-minded as well, start your own intense fitness camp. Get together a couple mornings a week (trade off houses to keep it fair) and plan butt-kicking workouts. Check out the book Bikini Bootcamp ($12, amazon.com) for ideas. The best part? If you get your workout done in the a.m., you’ll have the whole day to chill by the pool!
