Are you too attached to your phone? Here's how to tell...

We’re all pretty familiar with phobias—like being scared of spiders (a.k.a. arachnophobia) or a fear of enclosed spaces, claustrophobia. But what if we told you that nomophobia, a fear of not having your cell with you, was a legit thing?

A recent study conducted by researchers at Iowa State University suggests that nomophobia is real and incredibly prevalent in today’s society. Though nomophobia has not yet been added to the DSM, a medical handbook doctors use for diagnoses, we’re feeling pretty relieved that our phone obsession has been scientifically proven.

Next time you’re without your phone, take a mental survey. Are you feeling anxious that you can’t be reached by your friends and family? Or are you concerned because you can’t check your notifications on Twitter or Facebook? Maybe you’re even feeling worried that, without your cellphone, you’re going to get lost. If these apply to you, you might want to try and curb your phone addiction. Take some time out of your day to do something without your phone.

Going on a walk after dinner with the fam? Leave your phone at home. Keep your phone in another room while you read a book and only let yourself check it when you’ve finished a chapter or two. After some practice, being with your phone will become less and less of a priority.
