Eek! Slackin' on sleep could be making ya gain weight

Are you working out and eating healthy, but it seems like your still finding it tough to get in shape? It could be because of the amount of sleep you’re getting! A recent study published in the journal of sleep, Sleep, shows that no matter how health-conscious you are during the day, if you go to bed late then you’ll probs gain weight. Bummer, right?

The study researched 225 subjects who were encouraged to stay as sedentary as possible and were given unlimited access to food – no exercise and unlimited food, not a good combo! One group of the study slept from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. and the other group slept from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Which group gained more weight? You got it – the night owls.

The reason for this is the sleep deprived study subjects craved comfort food – ya know, stuff like French fries and Mom’s apple pie. The reason for that though, is unclear. Maybe it’s because only fatty foods are available at night (or just seem easier to grab and nosh), or maybe people that stay up late get hungrier. Bottom line though, is if you’re tryin’ to lose weight, or stay healthy, period, it’s time to hit they hay at a decent hour on the daily. No excuses!
