Ouch! Could all that texting seriously harm ya?
Ever get
that sore feeling in your thumbs after a long text convo? Well, that soreness might
be a little more serious than you thought. A couple texts here and there
shouldn’t hurt, but over a long period of time, repetitive texting can strain
muscles leading to tendonitis. This common form of tendonitis is known to most
people as “texting thumb.”
Texting thumb can usually be cured by letting your injury rest, though, sometimes healing requires physical therapy. But in more rare and super-scary cases, doctors recommend that people with severe texting thumb undergo surgery. Yikes!
Texting thumb
isn’t the only injury people can get from technology: Carpal Tunnel, a painful
condition caused by nerve compression in the wrists, is usually caused by typing
for a long time. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a similar pain in the elbows.
A text can
wait but your health can’t. So if you feel a twinge of texting pain or
numbness, put your phone down ASAP and give it a break until you feel
better. In the meantime, pick up the
phone and make a call, flatter your friends or crush with a surprise note in
their locker or make an arrangement to chat old-school as pen pals.
