Middle schools now drug testing student athletes

Drug testing in professional sports is a typical occurrence. We read stories all the time about athletes being fined or suspended for testing positive for certain performance enhancing or illicit substances. But drug testing for middle schoolers? Now that’s a whole different ball game.

The New York Times reports that schools across the country are beginning to require tweens and teens to submit to drug testing before they’re allowed to play school sports or participate in school-sponsored clubs and extracurricular activities.

While the urine samples are being tested for a range of substances, the school districts aren’t trying to crack down on over-performing pitchers and soccer superstars. Instead, they’re trying to deter kids from trying drugs like alcohol, steroids and marijuana that are increasingly finding their way into middle school halls.

Though school administrators where the testing programs have been instated say they think the endeavors are working, others aren’t so sure, since testing has never been proven to be successful at preventing people from taking drugs.

What do you think of this development, babes? Do you think drug testing in middle school is silly or smart?
