Help stop cheerleading injuries

We all know that cheerleading can be super dangerous (think: high-flying stunts, major tumbling). March is National Cheer Safety Month, so all the GL cheerleaders out there and those of you trying to make the squad should take note. Here’s what to do to make your sport extra safe!

In our February/March issue of GL, we talked with Dr. Thomas Vangsness who reminded all cheerleaders to warm up and stretch out before practice. Remember to tell you coach if you don’t feel comfortable with a stunt and to speak up if you’re injured.

There are tons more tips, plus heart-breaking stories of cheerleaders who’ve gotten seriously injured, on The National Cheer Safety Foundation’s web site. There, you can also scope out an emergency plan for your squad—prob one of the most important drills you can do.

So, girls, what does your squad do to stay safe? Have you ever experienced a scary fall? I remember falling out of more than one extension when I was in high school (ouch!) and having plenty of my teammates crash down on me. Blog it out…
