How to shave when you have sensitive skin
Okay for real, we all know the struggle of getting razor bumps right after shaving—or the burning feeling after using harshly scented shaving cream.
There is so much info out there about the perfect shaving routine for their sensitive skin, but the most important key is to find what works for you. We know this might be a daunting process, but we're here to help you get started.
1. Find the right razor and shaving cream.
The first (and biggest) step in creating your shaving routine is finding a gentle razor that works for you. There are so many out there, but here are some quick and easy tips: Avoid razors with added scents or lotions. Of course, we love a sweet-smelling addition to our shower, but anything with fragrance can be harsh on sensitive skin. 5- or 6-blade razors are the most common, but try a 2-3-blade razor if other options are too much for you. For shaving cream, try a gentle, fragrance-free formula. (Using a shaving cream helps keep your skin nice and moisturized while helping your razor glide smoothly.) Try brands like Billie and Venus for a great start.
2. Shave in the direction of your hair growth.
We're always told that shaving against the grain is best for a closer shave, but that can actually cause more irritation and knicks. Try shaving in the same direction as your hair growth (knee to ankle) for the best chance at avoiding irritation.
If it's your first time shaving, ask a trusted adult like a parent or older sibling to help teach you how to safely shave. It takes a bit of practice, but you'll be shaving like a pro in no time.
3. Follow up with antibacterial soap after your shave.
Before hopping out of the shower, trying using an antibacterial body wash directly after your shave. This helps eliminate bacteria that can cause ingrown hairs or razor bumps. We recommend brands like Dove for a super gentle formula.
4. Use a fragrance-free lotion after your shower.
Immediately following your shower, use a fragrance-free lotion to lock in extra moisture. Any gentle brands like Aveeno and Cetaphil are perfect for keeping your skin smooth. You can also try razor bump treatments like the PFB of Tend Skin solution for extra help.
5. Clean your razor/replace the blades frequently.
When you notice your razor starting to get dull, take it as a sign to replace the blade. Bacteria can build up in your razors after a few uses, so don't let it sit too long. Try a refill service like Joy to skip the hassle of remembering your refills.
Just like any routine, finding what works best for you takes time. Having sensitive skin doesn't have to be a total nightmare—just stay patient and trust the process.
