Texting

Did you know that, in the last 3 months of 2008, teenagers sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages per month? That’s around 80 texts per day. And what’s more? It’s more than DOUBLED since just last year. It’s scary, but this statistic from the Nielsen Company is completely true.

So…why should you care? We know you love texting (we do too, we’ll admit it), but you girlies are sending so many messages it could be harmful, according to an article in the New York Times.

How is texting bad? First and foremost, it can damage your health. You know how you stay up late texting your bestie? It’s cutting into your sleep. Besides, when your phone is always on you can say peace out to peace and quiet—you don’t ever have time where you can just relax. Oh, and have you ever heard of a repeated stress injury? Sure, texting hasn’t been around long enough to prove that your thumbs can suffer, but most doctors agree it’s likely that you could be causing them damage—temporary or permanent!

Another way texting can hurt you? In school. We’ve all done it—your crush totally smiled at you in the hallway and you didn’t have time to tell your buds before class, so you reach into your bag, pretend to root around for a pencil, and send them a quick text. It may seem innocent, but there’s a reason schools ban cell phones in the classroom: they’re a total distraction! When you text instead of listening to your teacher or taking notes, you could be jeopardizing your straight-A record.

Blog it out! What do you think of texting? Are you constantly tapping away at that phone? Does this new info make you wanna cut back on your texts?
