EXCLUSIVE! Dai Time is changing the game for Gen Z
Listen up, because Dai Time is redefining what it *really* means to be Gen Z in Every. Single. Way.
From going viral at just 6 years old to hosting her hit Snapchat series “It’s Dai Time,” the 18-year-old has built a media empire that spans book tours, celeb-studded red carpets, being the CEO of her own entertainment company, and even—wait for it—the White House (oh, and attending college full-time while she's at it, NBD). With over 1.5 million followers and the totally earned title as the "Voice of Gen Z," Dai is proof that there’s no dream too big and when it comes to making a differnce, age truly is just a number.
We sat down with Dai to get all the deets on her incredible journey, her mission to empower young voices, and, ofc, how she finds the time (pun fully intended) to do it all.
Girls' Life: You went viral at just 6 with "My TuTu." How did that experience shape your career?
Dai Time: Producing "My TuTu" and becoming an artist really helped me to believe that I could do anything I put my mind to, even at age 6. Now at 18, I'm still pushing those boundaries and continuing to follow my dreams through social media.
GL: You host a super trendy Snapchat show called "It's Dai Time." Tell us about how you got started.
Dai: It was a dream come true for me to partner with Snapchat to produce "It's Dai Time." I came up with the concept to channel all of the most trending topics and news for Gen Z while also creating a platform to introduce must-hear, relatable topics like cyberbullying and body shaming.
GL: Why is it so important to you to use your platform to elevate young voices?
Dai: Gen Z needs a platform to thrive. We're creative and outgoing, and we have unique ways to shape the world around us, but only if we're given that opportunity. I pride myself on making my social media platforms relatable—almost like a big sister—while pushing my peers to go out and be great.
GL: What's your go-to question for breaking the ice with a celeb?
Dai: I love chatting about the most random topics on the red carpet because talking about fun and unexpected things is the icebreaker itself! But if I had to pick, I'd say either "What's your must-have piece in fashion?" or "What's your current favorite song on your playlist?"
GL: What has been the most unbelievable, pinch-me moment of your career so far?
Dai: This year, I was invited to the White House to have brunch with President Joe Biden. It was an honor to be a part of the group of Black creatives who were at the brunch to receive our flowers for the impact we're making.
GL: How do you stay organized and manage your time while balancing school and your career?
Dai: Some days are super productive and work-driven, while others I spend hanging with friends or at my computer. I love using a schedule to prioritize all the time-sensitive tasks. For me, those tasks are usually school or content deadlines, and everything else follows.
GL: What's something you love to do when you're totally offline and taking a break from social media?
Dai: Self-care! I love a good self-care session, whether it's going to get a facial, doing hot yoga or playing my favorite game. It's definitely hard to remind myself to take a break from social media sometimes, but when I do take the time to focus on my own health—mentally and physically—I always feel like the best version of myself.
GL: What's one thing you'd tell your younger self about chasing your dreams?
Dai: "You've got this." There was a period in my life when I was filled with doubt because of mean comments online and burnout. Now I know to be confident in myself and that I indeed do "got this!"
And as for my peers tuning in, always believe in yourself and your dreams. Don't wait until you're older, and don't let yourself stop you. If you can dream it, you can do it!
