Take Grandma's advice: Start knitting

You might typically think of knitting as an activity reserved for when you enter the nursing home at age 70, but it turns out that Grandma is actually onto something. And, believe it or not, The New York Times reports that, according to The Craft Yarn Council, one-third of women aged 25-35 are knitters, and the hobby is becoming just as popular for men and teens.

Not only is knitting officially becoming a fun way to pass the time, it turns out it's also pretty good for your health. According to Dr. Herbert Benson, author of The Relaxation Response, the repetitive action of knitting can get you into a relaxed state not unlike the kind you find with yoga and meditation. Plus, it can even lower your heart rate and blood pressure and reduce harmful blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Knitting has also been found to be helpful for those who struggle with addiction. When your hands are busy, it makes it more challenging to give into the temptation.

Plus, when you’re able to create tangible and useful items, it has the tendency to help boost your self-esteem. Knowing you made your amazing new scarf, instead of just picking it out at the store, can give you an awesome sense of purpose. So not only will you look great, you’ll feel great too!

Looks like this might be the newest and best way to cure your winter boredom. Pop on your favorite TV show or some soothing tunes and put those hands to work. You might be surprised by how much better you feel.
