Need a new read? Head to McDonald's

Who would’ve thought that McDonald’s, peddler of hamburger patties and cheap plastic toys, would become the biggest name in books—at least in Britain? Not us, certainly, but for the month of January, it’s the truth.

As part of a publicity campaign for the new movie War Horse, McDonald’s restaurants across the pond will be replacing their Happy Meal toys with installments of War Horse author Michael Morpurgo’s Mudpuddle Farms series. All in, the fast-food giant will be handing out 9 million books. That’s more than the entire country expects to sell in a month.

There’s no word yet on whether this campaign will cross the Atlantic, but we’ve gotta admit it: We’re a li’l bit impressed by this PR push. What do you think, babes? Will it encourage kids to read, or make them miss their Happy Meal toys?
