7 car games for the perfect family road trip
Summer is here...and so is road trip szn! It's time to pack your bags and head out to that bucket list location you've been eyeing for months. In order to make the journey just as good as the destination, we created a list of some of the best games for the road. These are perfect to pull out when Dad keeps on fiddling with the radio (and you're practically falling asleep).
Name that tune
Based on the popular television show, this game is perfect for anyone who wants to test their musical trivia skills. The rules are simple: Guess the song and artist first. This game does require preparation time before the road trip to create the playlist. However, there are plenty of apps such as Song Pop and Song Quiz in case you're feeling ready for the challenge.
Car bingo
And Bingo was his name-o! This tried-and-true game will always be a car ride staple. Each person gets a bingo board and marks off the items that they see. Whoever gets a column or row checked off first wins the game. This game tests your observation skills and allows for some fun sightseeing for everyone involved. Find some bingo boards to download online such as this travel bingo and this road trip one.
I spy
I spy with my little eye...another perfect game for any long car ride. The game is a classic for a reason. The fun premise of searching for a mystery item with clues is a great way to improve your observational skills. It's also a great way to take in the beauty of your surroundings and possibly see something cool.
The sentence game
Prepare for boatloads of laughter! The game starts off with one person starting the story with a sentence. Every person takes turns adding to the story with only one sentence. The fun part? There will always be twists and turns in the story as different people take over and the ending is never what you are expecting. When you feel the story is coming to a close, start another story and see where the adventure takes you.
The license plate game
This simple game is guaranteed fun! Each player needs a United States checklist like this one and a pencil. Anytime that you see a new state's license plate, mark it off. Whoever has the most states checked off wins! Not only is this game a road trip classic, but you'd be surprised how many states you can find.
20 questions
This classic does not require any prep! Each player takes turns thinking of a person, place or object. Then, the other players ask yes or no questions to try to guess the secret thing. In order to win, the players must guess the thing in 20 questions or less. This game keeps you on your toes and helps out with your sleuthing skills.
The alphabet game
If you want a game to keep you on your toes, this is the game for you. You start off with a category and everyone must say something that fits within the prompt and matches their letter. The first person's word starts with "A", the second person's word starts with "B" and so forth. In order to make the game more fun and challenging, do speed rounds which require all players to think on their feet. Some fun categories to try are Disney movies, early 2000s songs, book characters and fictional places.
