HOW TO: Shape-Up!

Face shape isn’t the only thing to think about when getting a cut. There are also all different types of hair out there. Thick, fine, textured. Straight, curly, wavy. A good stylist will be able to tell you whether the cut you choose will look right with your hair. For example, the layered cut that falls right around your best friend’s face might be perfect for her wavy hair, but what would happen if your other friend—the one with fine, straight hair—went for the same cut? Well, it might make her hair look thin and frazzled, instead of full and lush. Check out the following list to see which cuts look best with your hair type.

Fine and Straight

Try: A long and sleek blunt cut to show off your hair’s perfect straightness. Short cuts are also good for this hair type because they add body.

Stay Away From: Long layers. They make fine, straight hair look super-thin, and you’ll get lots of fly-aways.

Fine and Curly/Wavy

Try: A chin-length or above-the-shoulder cut. It’ll help you make your fine hair look full.

Stay Away From: Super-long hair. Your curls will get all tangly and dry, and they’ll also be harder to maintain.

Fine and Textured

Try: A shoulder-length look with gradual, face framing layers. Psyched for straight? A thorough blow-dry with a straightening comb attachment (best for textured hair) can turn your tresses into a flirty flip when  you use hot rollers on the ends for a little curl.

Stay Away From: Long hair or extreme layers. While extreme layers can sometimes snazzy up straight ol’ locks, textured hair, with its energy and bounce, might try to go in three directions at once!

Thick and Straight

Try: Long, layered cuts or chin-length bobs. These styles give your thick hair lots of movement.

Stay Away From: Blunt cuts. Your hair will just kind of hang there.

Thick and Curly/Wavy

Try: Long, layered cuts or shoulder-length bobs. Layers show off your beautiful curls and highlight your face. A shoulder-length bob will help keep your curls from gettting weighed down.

Stay Away From: Super-short, layered cuts. They tend to take on a geometric shape. And, er, no one looks good with a triangle head!

Thick and Textured

Try: Thick and textured hair is one of the most versatile hair types, because this hair holds braids without those annoying flyaways. So experiment with French braids and mini braids. For a change, you can also straighten your hair with a blow-dryer and comb attachment, then set it in big rollers for a shiny, straight look.

Stay Away From: Choppy layers or a completely au natural look. Textured hair really holds its shape, so too many layers can leave you with what looks like permanent hat-head. Also, thick, textured hair tends to be dry, so unless you want your hair to get huuuge, keep it happy and mega-hydrated for maximum style and shine.

Tip! If you really want something other than what we’ve suggested here, talk to your stylist. She may have some solutions to get you closer to the cut you’re looking for!
