Here's how to beat the winter blues
Winter—a season often glorified by the holidays, snow days and *so* much time to get crafty and cozy. (Is it too good to be true?) As joyful as winter might seem to some, it isn't *always* filled with joy. Let's get real: the winter months can be tough to get through, *especially* if you suffer from seasonal depression.
Seasonal depression, also known as SAD, is a seasonal affective disorder that occurs during cold winter months when there isn't as much sunlight. If you've noticed that you've been feeling extra tired and a bit down throughout the winter months, you're not alone. Seasonal depression is actually quite common. The good news? SAD is treatable, and it won't last forever. Here are 10 activities you can implement in your life to beat those winter blues.
Stick to a routine
Whether you meditate before breakfast every morning or start your homework right after school to ensure a good night's sleep, sticking to a routine is key to a well-balanced brain. Even when the winter blues creep in, having specific activities to look forward to each day will help. Try incorporating certain hobbies or self-care habits into your daily routine (like a morning gratitude journal or a winter skincare routine).
Cook yourself your fave meal
During the chilly months, there's nothing like a hearty homecooked meal. Whether it's your dad's famous homemade soup or your go-to boxed mac 'n cheese, cooking and indulging in your fave comfort food is oh-so soothing.
Take a shower or bath
The quickest way to fix the winter blues? Hopping into the shower and washing your worries away. Hot showers increase circulation, relaxation and energy, and decrease stress and anxiety. Not loving the idea of a self-care shower? Treat yourself to a spa-inspired bubble bath (complete with calming essential oils).
Practice yoga
We know how it is: by the time you finish your homework, it's too dark and cold outside to play with friends or go for a daily walk. If this sounds familiar, this is your sign to take an after-school yoga break to unwind and relax. Simply hit play on a video (we heart this calming guided yoga practice), and stretch the winter stress away!
Do something you love
Whether you paint or bake (which, btw, is amazing for your mental health), take time to unwind and express yourself by doing something you love. Even on the busiest of days, it's imperative to make personal time. Even spending a few minutes a day adding a positive page to your scrapbook can help bring a smile to your face.
Get movin'
Feeling down? The chilly weather shouldn't stop you from moving! Do a HIIT video in your room, have a dance party or play with your pup for an instant serotonin boost. And, if the weather isn't too brutal, opt for going on a walk outside! Sunlight and movement can work wonders.
Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness, or simply noticing and honing into how you feel in the present moment, is the epitome of instant relaxation. Try closing your eyes and taking deep breaths as you focus on relaxing each and every part of your body. From the top of your head to your toes, notice where your breathe goes. If you have a few extra minutes, play a relaxing guided meditation video.
Write
Cultivate chill energy by picking up your journal or dumping your thoughts into the notes app of your phone to feel refreshed and recharged. Writing can be an *amazing* way to better understand and release all of the stressers in your life. Gratitude journaling can also help you see the positive lights in your life, even when you're going through dark times.
Dive into a good book or show
Whether you read your fave book or watch your comfort show, you *so* deserve to cozy up with your best blanket and unwind. Take a few minutes at the end of each day to dive into another world for a little bit. You'll be sure to notice a shift in your mood.
Reach out!
No matter how hard things might seem, you are not alone. Don't be afraid to reach out to your support system when you need to. Feeling like your winter blues are more than just a little sadness? There are resources available.
