Dear Carol
"Dear Carol, my guy friend has a girlfriend"
Dear Carol,
My best guy friend, who I've known since I was 3, just got a girlfriend. All he does is talk to her, and I feel like he doesn't hang out with me anymore. I don't want to tell him he can't have a girlfriend, but when I went to say hi in school, he totally ignored me and called her over.
—My Guy Friend Has a Girlfriend
Dear My Guy Friend Has a Girlfriend,
Ouch. Time for a talk. You can't tell him he can't have a girlfriend (you aren't the boss of him), but you can tell him how you are feeling. Don't say, "I'm mad!" Say, "I'm glad that you have a girlfriend, but don't forget about me. I still want to hang out sometimes, too." Then do not, I repeat, do not spend your time with him trashing her. If you force him to pick, he may choose her over you. Instead, figure out what he likes about his girlfriend and be nice to her. Be patient, generous, and easygoing, and your friendship with him may outlast his romance with her. By the way, someday when you have a boyfriend, your best guy friend may have mixed feelings, too.
