Why roller skating should be your new favorite workout

There’s a new way to stay active and have fun. We’re talking, ofc, about roller skating. The sport gained popularity in the 70s when roller discos sprang up across the world. Now, thanks to a surge in roller skating TikToks, it’s making a major comeback. With a pair of skates, a helmet, and a little patience, anyone can join in on the trend—no professional training required. Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons why roller skating should be your new favorite workout.

The Skates Are Super Cute

Unlike in other sports where you’re stuck with basic cleats and sneakers, roller skating allows you to pick from an endless array of skates. You can channel a retro vibe with classic white skates and old-school striped socks, or go totally modern with a futuristic holographic pair. Take the customization even further by adding stickers and fake gemstones. Just be sure to find the right size to avoid blisters, especially if you’re just starting out. And don’t forget a helmet!

This could be the summer you find your #skatecrew. Roller skating is a great way to meet new people who share your love for the sport. Whether you decide to skate a mile a day to stay fit or film perfectly synchronized skate vids together, you and your skate squad will soon be inseparable. If you don’t know any fellow skaters, see if your local roller rink offers classes. You can sign up with a bestie and find new crew members.

Another advantage roller skating has over your typical workout? You can always come up with new moves to shake things up. Invent new choreography that matches your skill level on skates. Or, upgrade a dance you already know by adding spins, jumps, and other tricks. Once you’ve spent enough hours practicing, consider entering a competition. Even if you don’t win, you’ll get to show off what you’ve learned.

It’s Good For Your Health

It turns out roller skating has many of the same health benefits as activities like running and Zumba. As personal trainer Amy Fanella shared with Bustle, skating can improve your overall strength and your heart health. You can even increase your flexibility. Just remember to learn your limits and work within them. There’s no shame in clinging to a wall the first time you put on your skates, trust.
