Food for thought: Are French fries dumbing ya down?
Scientists fed one group of mice high-fat diets, and the other group low-fat diets to see the results. Weight gain and other expected outcomes occurred, but the study also revealed higher levels of stress-out and depression related chemicals.
And once you’re stuck on fatty foods, it can be hard to let ‘em go. The lead study author explained:
“The chemicals changed by the diet are associated with depression. A change of diet then causes withdrawal symptoms and a greater sensitivity to stressful situations, launching a vicious cycle of poor eating.”
Bottom line? Even if you improve your eating habits after a fatty diet, the sudden change will make you feel stressed, anxious and depressed. And feeling down in the dumps could send ya right back to fries and pizza.
Proof of the food-brain connection is piling up, and studies like these are giving us even more reasons to ditch the junk. A little indulgence once in a while is totally OK, but be nice to your brain and avoid fatty stuff as much as you can.
