U.S. Women's soccer loses to Sweden, but are still in the Cup

Although the US Women’s National Soccer Team lost against Sweden 2-1 Wednesday night, fans shouldn’t give up hope. Having even tied the game against Sweden meant that we would not be facing Brazil in the quarterfinals, but at least they are carrying on in the tournament.

According to an article by the Associated Press, US coach Pia Sundhage looks at this loss as an opportunity. The American women will be playing some tough games against really good teams, but this is a chance to make the US team work harder and become stronger. After the US Women’s team beat both North Korea and Columbia, they had built up their confidence after the challenging journey to Germany for the World Cup. They had not yet played a team as talented and intense as Sweden in the tournament. Now that teams are being weeded out and only the most able are continuing on in the Cup the Americans will be facing even more aggressive opponents.

For any of you soccer girlies out there, Sundhage shares this refreshing and optimistic outlook that you should try to resemble. This defeat does not mean failure. The US plays Brazil on July 10th. If we win, the team will then play either France or England in the Semi-finals. You can catch the game at 11:00am on ESPN.
