Fact or fiction: Drink chocolate milk after a workout
Chocolate milk after a workout? Sounds crazy right? Well lucky for you, and us, chocolate milk after working out has been proven to be a great recovery drink. Enjoy that chocolatey goodness! Only after sweating your butt off though!
Chocolate milk includes lots of vitamins and nutrients essential to staying healthy including B-complex vitamins (which turn food into energy), calcium and vitamin D to strengthen bones. In addition, it's low in saturated fats and cholesterol. There are two main reasons why chocolate milk works as a recovery drink: protein and carbohydrates.
Let’s start with protein, after working out, your muscles are stressed and may have mini-tears in them. Consuming protein helps with muscle growth and tissue repair. In addition, it’s important to replenish your carbohydrates after a workout because if you don't then the body might use protein stores instead of glycogen for nutrience. And chocolate milk often contains the best ratio of carbs to protein, 4:1! Not only is it healthier for you, it’s also healthier for your wallet as many performance drinks are super expensive compared to our fave childhood drink!
