Crafty costumes: 7 ways to wear a witch's hat
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
You’ve already done the Wicked Witch of the West thing,
right? Turn this classic tale on it’s head by taking on the fairer witch,
Glinda, with a Glinda-gone-bad costume. Grab a poofy pink dress—hint: head to a
thrift store for some ah-mazing finds or repurpose a formal dance dress for the
evening. Add a wand and some glittery makeup, and you’ve got yourself a
costume! Another idea? Go green as the Wonderful Wizard himself!
We Heart Harry Potter
With Pottermore officially launching any day now, J.K. Rowling’s world is back on the forefront of pop culture. What better way to show your house colors than to dress up as a Hogwarts student for Halloween? Choose Harry or his friends, a professor or a Death Eater. House points for winning duels…or taking on the Sorting Hat.
Just call me Mother Nature
You’ll need to hit up the crafts store for this one. Grab green fabric paint, some green or brown netting and fake flowers, leaves and vines. Paint your hat green and let it dry completely before decorating with the netting and faux flora. Don an earth-toned ensemble and top it off with your hat! For more cute add ons, try gluing safety pins to fake flowers to adorn a dress.
Disney Diva
Grab some blue fabric paint and gold or yellow felt. Paint your witch’s hat blue, cut out and glue on yellow stars and moons, and let your creation dry. When the big day arrives, slip into a red dress and top off your ensemble with the hat. Bring along a broomstick…and some Mickey Mouse ears if you’re feeling kitschy. Your costume? The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Fantastia!
Fashion forward
Not big into dressing up but still dying to hit up a Halloween party this year? Head to a fabric store! Snap up some tulle or black netting and anything else that suits your fancy (plastic spiders, anyone?). When you get home, snatch up your hat and a glue gun, and go to work dressing up that witch’s mainstay. Go for drape-y and dramatic, like an elegant pillbox that’s taken a Monster Mash turn. Pair it with a sparkly LBD and heels, and you’re set! Hint: If you’ve got a teeny hat on hand that barely fits on your head, try it on for size! Angle it on your head and use bobby pins to keep it in place. Adorbs!
Got a group?
Theater geeks should consider taking on the roles of the three witches in Macbeth. Memorize a few lines, like the iconic “Double, double, toil and trouble” passage, and prance around town.
Another option? Take on the Sanderson sisters from the cult classic Halloween flick Hocus Pocus. Mary, Sarah and Winifred never looked so good. Be sure to light the black flame candle!
