Build your own butterfly garden

Flowers are fab and all, but this girl loves seeing friendly critters in her garden. And no garden-lovin’ creature is quite as beautiful as the butterfly. You can find ‘em all over the world, from the Amazon to the North Pole. Why not tempt a few to your neck of the woods with some butterfly-friendly plants?

Set aside an afternoon to get your goods growing. You’ll need a large pot…or some space in M & D’s backyard garden, plant soil, a shovel and a ride to a local nursery or garden center. You don’t need all of the plants that butterflies love, but do pick a few for your patch of paradise. Keep an eye out for: milkweed, butterfly bush (lantana), sunflowers, violets, dandelions, lilacs, honeysuckle, clover, thistle, alfalfa, asters, marigolds, phlox or nettles.

Once you’ve got them planted (aim for after the last frost if you’re in a colder climate), consider adding a few large rocks and a saucer of water to give the beauties some shelter from the sun and something cool to sip.

Butterflies should be touching down in your garden within a few weeks. Grab your camera and snap away, sweetie!
