Lit Chicks Challenge pick: What Would My Cell Phone Do?

When Aggie Eckhart follows her family to Alaska, she’s pretty sure life can’t get any worse. No besties, no popularity, plus tons of quality time with her crazy Cuban mom? Not exactly a recipe for success.

After her fancy new cell phone goes missing, and she’s lost her link to her old life, Aggie is ready to give up on her new school, new friends, new crush and, oh yeah, cross-country skiing lessons for a long spell of hibernation.  But when she uses GPS to find out what her phone’s been up to and—gasp—discovers her cellie is livin’ a far more fun life than she is, Aggie takes a page out of her phone’s address book.

I have to admit, Micol Ostow’s novel had me yawning at first. While the text-speak diary style What Would My Cell Phone Do? is written in is fun to read, there’s a whole lotta background and not a ton of plot in the first half of this book. But once Aggie drops her cell phone, Ostow’s tale starts to get interesting, engrossing and enjoyable. Sixteen-year-old Aggie is hysterically funny and rather real…though I seriously wish she would drop the pessimism every once in a while.

My favorite part? Probably her supporting cast. Mean girl Tegan is deliciously evil, Aggie’s mamacita is a riot and her new BFF Duncan is the catty guy friend we all wish we had.

The great thing about What Would My Cell Phone Do? is that even though it gets off to a slow start, by the time your eyes scan the last page, you’re itching for a sequel. I am dying to know what happens next!

TALK BACK: Tell us what you think

Let’s get the conversation going with a few discussion questions. Feel free to address them (or not) in the comments!

1. Why is Aggie so eager to fade into the background?

2. Why do you think she was able to blossom in Alaska, but not in Miami?

3. What do you think the lesson is with regards to mothers and daughters?

Word to the wise: If you haven’t read What Would My Cell Phone Do? yet and don’t want your experience with the novel to be spoiled, do yourself a favor and don’t read the comments to this post ‘til you’ve read the last page of the book!
