Stay Up With A Wish After Midnight

You’ve probably wondered what it would be like to travel back in time, right?  Who hasn’t? A Wish After Midnight by Zetta Elliott is about this very idea.

Genna Colon is a 16 year-old African-American girl living Brooklyn in 2001. She’s smart, but has other problems: she’s tall, has uncontrollable hair, has little money and likes classmate Judah a bit too much. Genna wants to graduate from college and become a psychologist, but with her family’s financial sitch, it seems impossible. To escape her worries, Genna flees to a garden, where she throws pennies into a fountain while making wishes.

Judah eventually notices Genna, and they become a couple, but when her mother finds out about the two, she runs away to her garden just as it is about to close. She has never been there after closing time. And as Genna throws in her pennies to make a wish, something mysterious happens.

Genna wakes up and finds herself paralyzed and confused. Gathering from the people who are taking care of her, she soon learns that she’s still in Brooklyn—but the year is 1863. Everyone she meets confronts Genna about her past, but she doesn’t have a good story to tell them. Sent to work for Dr. Brant and his wife as a maid, she befriends Nannie, the other maid, and must endure terrible tasks.

When Genna begins to care for sick patients with Dr. Brant, she begins to take care of someone who looks very familiar—could it really be Judah?

Does Genna ever escape from the horrible time of 1863 and get back to her familiar life of 2001? Read this amazing novel (on shelves now) to find out!

This book has something in it for everyone: romance, history, mystery and even a bit of magic. When reading, you’ll find out what it was like to be a young, African-American during 1863, and the difficulties that they had to face.
