The ultimate girlpower movies to watch for Women's History Month
ICYMI, March is Women's History Month—so all month long, we're celebrating fierce femininity, leading ladies and *all* the girlpower. And one of our fave ways to pay tribute to trailblazing gals? Catching flicks that channel major female empowerment.
Peep these inspirational movies to watch with your besties, plus some tasty treats that pair perfectly with them (bc what's a movie night without equally awesome snacks?).
Aquamarine (2006)
This culture-defining classic will make waves at your next squad sleepover. Aquamarine is a family comedy about two best friends (Emma Roberts & JoJo) who help a mermaid (Sara Paxton) find her way back home.
While it may seem like the typical teen movie about falling in love, it subverts expectations by focusing on the empowering new friendship that blooms throughout the film.
The third act is a tear-jerker that's sure to make you appreciate how amazing your BFFs really are. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll get some mermaidcore outfit inspo all at the same time!
Snack pairing: It's no secret that Aquamarine loves all things related to the sea—and her snack choices are no different. One scene in the movie shows her eating a massive tub of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food ice cream with extra salt (you know, because she's a saltwater creature). But before you go dumping sea salt into your favorite tub of Ben & Jerry's, make ice cream sandwiches with it instead. Grab a pack of your favorite cookies (Chips Ahoy work great) plus a generous scoop of Phish Food ice cream. If you're looking for that extra-salty sea-creature flair, a drizzle of salted caramel sauce is the best way to do it. (No salt shakers, pls.)
Dirty Girls (2000)
This obscure indie documentary is short, but it's densely packed with thought-provoking convos. Dirty Girls follows two 13-year-old girls who are ostracized by their classmates for one reason: They're feminists.
Even the title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the rude things their peers say about them. Back in the '90s, it was a common belief that feminists were "gross" or "unkempt." But the Dirty Girls fight hard to reclaim the term while educating their classmates on the real truth about feminism.
The film highlights the Riot Grrrl subculture of the mid-'90s, which focused on women's liberation through art, fashion and music. The film will make you think, and it's a great way to foster some meaningful discussions with you and your pals this IMW.
Snack pairing: The best way to enjoy Dirty Girls is obviously with a huge cup of dirt— edible dirt, of course. All you need are crushed Oreos and chocolate pudding. You can add tons of fun toppings, like sprinkles, chocolate drizzle or whipped cream. If you want to amp up the dirt theme, muddy it up with some berries, pretzel sticks and creepy-crawly gummy worms.
Josie & The Pussycats (2001)
This pink and purple Y2K film is practically an ode to girlpower. It's fun, vibrant and expands on the origin story of everyone's favorite cat-like girl group. Josie & The Pussycats is a critique of hyper-consumerism, pop-stardom and the music industry, but it's also a film about how we girls can combat all of those things when we stick together.
Snack pairing: The villain in the film, Fiona (played by Parker Posey), throws a huge slumber party for the band. And of course, it's accompanied by a snack platter just as extravagant as she is. Fill up a big tray with M&Ms, chips, pretzels, gummy bears and popcorn.
