You won't believe what this high schooler chose as her senior yearbook quote
This girl has *had* it with her school's dress code.
New Jersey high school senior Tori DiPaolo addressed just that through her comedic yet powerful yearbook quote: “I’m sorry, did my shoulders distract you from reading this quote?”
Becuase of Tori's school's dress code, she was repremanded several times for what she wore to school because of what she calls a "sexist" dress code. In Tori's school, female students are not allowed to wear halter tops or tank tops because these articles of clothing "distract" others. The male students, however, can expose their shoulders as much as they please. This double standard implies that the female body is distracting because it is something that is meant to be looked at, whether the female students like it or not.
“It’s all based on sexism, and it is completely unreasonable,” Tori told Yahoo! Style. “There have been a number of incidents where I was called into the office due to what I was wearing. Whether it was my bra strap showing, or my midriff being a quarter inch exposed, administration always gave me a problem.”
The ultimate issue with these dress codes and this idea of female bodies seen as forms of distraction is that these concepts force people to see women as objects before they see them as human beings.
Tori makes an excellent point, adding, “We do need to follow rules, but we also have rights and freedom that shouldn’t be infringed upon by people’s sexist rules.”
Here, here, Tori.
