Girls are rocking it in the STEM fields
It's a popular misconception that boys are more gifted than girls when it comes to STEM fields, but the Washington Post reports that in a national test on these subjects girls outscored boys. Way to go, girls! 45% of eighth-grade girls scored proficient, compared to only 42% of eighth-grade boys. "The test was designed to measure students’ abilities in areas such as understanding technological principles, designing solutions and communicating and collaborating," the Washington Post explains. "Girls were particularly strong in the latter."
Though the STEM fields are still pretty male-dominated, girls in science and engineering movements have grown in past years. With programs like Girls in Tech, it has never been easier for young girls to get involved. Karlie Kloss, one of our girl crushes, has also made an impact with her Kode with Klossy summer camps and scholarships.
Coding has become a super important skill to have—and one that isn't too hard to get started in with a little research. One of our fave nonprofits, Girls Who Code, works to not only increase girls’ interest in tech, but to close the gender pay gap, too. Even if your school doesn’t offer classes, you can check out all kinds of camps, programs and free online tutorials.
