Meet Melody, the newest American Girl doll

What better way to celebrate Black History Month than by introducing a new American Girl doll?

Meet Melody Ellison, a nine-year old girl living in Detroit during the rise of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. She loves to sing, perform at church, and most importantly, she is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help raise awareness of racial discrimination.

As Mark Speltz, a senior historian who helped developed Melody’s story, told CBS News, "When we learn about the civil rights movement, we learn about a handful of really important people, But, the movement was driven by average, ordinary Americans, like Melody."

Though she doesn't have an official release day yet, Melody will be available this summer. We can't wait!
