Holding hands just might've saved this couple's lives
The two teens were taking a stroll when a thunderstorm blew through the area and a bolt of lightning struck Dylan. One minute they were walking and talking, and the next minute they were on the ground, terrified. Dylan told the local CBS station, “It felt like someone had hit me over the head with a sheet of metal.” Lexie got some major air, landing a few feet from where she and Dylan had been standing before.
Thankfully, someone driving by saw what happened and stopped to help. Lexie and Dylan felt fine, though, just a little “tingly,” and stopped for lunch before heading home. When they got back, their parents took them to see a doctor.
“These two were lucky that they were holding hands,” Dr. Stefan Reynoso told CBS Los Angeles. Since Lexie and Dylan were holding hands, the lightning strike was less powerful, because the electricity had two bodies to flow through instead of just one.
Dr. Reynoso thinks the lightning struck Dylan’s head, flowed through their hands and out Lexie’s foot. Talk about electric connection between the couple. If they hadn’t been holding hands, the lightning could have caused serious injuries, like heart problems or severe burns. Just a little tired and achy, Lexie and Dylan feel pretty lucky.
The chance of being struck by lightning is one in a million, according to Dr. Reynoso. And the chance of surviving without a scratch by holding hands is even more rare. Experts at The National Lightning Safety Institute said that this story was an exception, and that people who are outside during a lightning storm (which we do not suggest) should stay at least 15 feet from other people.
But for this couple, love saved their lives. Dylan and Lexie have been dating for six months, and we think it’s safe to say that their love is electric.
