Feel Good Friday: This community came together to support one 7-year-old boy
Last year, Bryan's life turned upside down when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Because Bryan has cancer, he has to stay away from large crowds and can't go out much, keeping him cooped up in his house for much of the time.
When Leanne Christie, a family friend, realized it must be boring for him to stay at home all the time, she began planning a major surprise. Christie created a GoFundMe page to raise money to renovate the Carroll's backyard, complete with a swing set and slide so that Bryan would have a fun, safe place to play without having to leave his home.
Once over $3,000 was raised, a group of 50 community volunteers (including family, teachers, and schoolmates) spent an afternoon putting the project into action, creating a place he'd love to spend time. By the time the volunteers finished the project, Bryan's backyard was not only enhanced with a swing set, but it had new sod, a fire pit, patio furniture and plenty of squirt guns and other fun toys to play with.
Mr. Carroll told Yahoo Parenting that his son's new favorite activity is chatting away with his sister in the backyard's new colorful chairs. When Bryan's father was asked about Bryan's reaction to the new backyard, Mr. Carroll said, "He loves it. It was the first time he's ever run outside like that, and it was great to see."
Stories like these make us love Feel Good Fridays. We're so happy Bryan finally has a safe, comfortable place to play. He deserves it!
