Happy World Emoji Day!
So what's so special about July 17th that it got picked for World Emoji Day? If you look closely, you'll notice it's the famous date shown on the calendar emoji on your iPhone. 📅
But World Emoji Day isn't just for iPhone or iOS system users; everyone can join in on the fun. WorldEmojiDay.com suggests celebrating by texting only through emojis, checking out emoji fun facts with emojipedia.com, dressing up as your favorite emoji or submitting your own new emoji ideas to unicode.org, the website in charge of making new emojis.
First created in Japan in the 1990s by Shigetaka Kurita, emojis have truly come a long way… and have a lot in store for the future. Some companies such as the British firm Intelligent Environments are currently working on a security passcode system using all emojis, while Fooji allows Twitter users to order food by simply tweeting an emoji. Even better? Unicode is introducing even more emojis next June, with Yahoo News reporting we'll be getting those avocado, selfie, face palm and shark emojis we've been craving (in addition to a ton of others). 🙀
While some people are blowing up social media with clever emoji statuses and facts, others seem to be hating on the July 17th trend. On Twitter, one user wrote, "If anything doesn't need a special day, it's emojis.” But, as Taylor Swift would say, “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.” 💁 So just shake it off and go join in the celebration.
