Not-so-good sports: Two girls' basketball teams suspended after trying to lose the same game
Winning really isn't everything...at least, not to the girls' basketball teams of Riverdale and Smyrna High Schools. In one of the strangest games ever played, the two opposing Tennessee teams were disqualified from the district playoffs after both attempted to lose the match–on purpose.
It might sound crazy, but apparently both teams believed that losing would get them further in the tournament. They were both going to automatically advance, after all, and the winning team would have to face defending national champs Blackman High School. Better safe than sorry, right?
Wrong. Unfortunately for the girls, the ref caught on pretty quickly, accusing both teams of "play[ing] to lose the game." The bad sportsmanship had some pretty serious consequences, too–Riverdale and Smyrna not only got kicked out of the post-season, but they were also put on probation for the rest of this school year and the next. Oh, and each team was fined $1,500. Yikes.
The lesson? Do what you're supposed to and believe in yourself. We promise you'll go further in life, on and off the court.
