Feel-Good Friday: Homecoming Queen hands over her crown to bullied classmate

Two girls in North Texas proved that while glitz, glamor and glory can be nice, friendship is truly the biggest prize.

Anahi A. and Naomi M., two girls who were nominated for Homecoming Queen at Grand Prairie High School, made a secret pact that if either of them won the crown, the title would go to someone more deserving—their best friend, Lillian ‘Lilly’ S.

Described as a kind-spirited, cheerful and energetic girl, Lilly had faced the torment of bullies before the homecoming ceremony. According to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, the week before the homecoming game, a group of girls who Lilly thought were her friends played a vicious prank on her, getting her hopes up by telling her that she had been nominated to homecoming court along with Anahi and Naomi, her two friends since 7th grade. In reality, she wasn’t on the ballot.

However, the prank backfired when Lilly was awarded the Homecoming Queen title and was crowned in front of the thousands of spectators at the homecoming football game on September 19th.

When Anahi’s name was called at the ceremony as the winner of the Homecoming Queen crown, Anahi stayed true to the original plan that she and Naomi came up with, asking the announcer to request that Lilly step up and receive the crown, honoring her as a “very hard-working senior” and someone who is truly “a friend to everyone."

Lilly, who was at the event taking pictures for the yearbook, shed “tears of happiness” when her name was called, according to the local news station KTVT.

“I was like, ‘My name is not on the poll. How is it that possible?’,” explained Lilly to KTVT.

As for her friends, they have absolutely no regrets.

"For me, I want to say, and I always say, Lilly won. I just ran in her place, in her position," Anahi said. "When they ask me, 'Were you homecoming queen?' I say, 'No, Lilly is homecoming queen.'"

These girls really show friendship at it’s finest.
