Teen suing her parents for financial support
Rachel Canning, an 18-year-old in New Jersey, is suing
her parents for child support, private school tuition, medical and
related bills, college expenses and legal fees. The honor student is a senior
in high school and claims that her parents kicked her out of the house in the
middle of the school year as soon as she turned 18. She has been living with
her best friend since then. Currently, Rachel’s classmates are fundraising to
pay her tuition.
In a letter to the principal of Rachel’s private school, her parents wrote that she “has shown no indication of remotely abiding by rules or changing behavior,” and now that she is legally adult, they are no longer required to financially support her. Apparently a boyfriend the parents do not approve of is among the problems her parents have.
The hearing is scheduled for this afternoon. Rachel is seeking an emergency court order to require her parents to pay to support her, now and in the future. What do you think of this conundrum? Once you turn 18, do you think your parents should have to support you? Tell us in the comments.
