Reach out and read! YA lit tackles mental health probs
May is Mental Health Awareness month, which means it's the prime time to check out the ReachOut Reads program.
Whether you are affected personally by one of these disorders or are simply interested in learning more about them, ReachOut Reads is a great resource to get informed and connect with other teens. The program seeks not only to offer a feeling of comfort and a newfound ability to cope with these issues through literary outlets, but also to raise awareness about mental health issues and how to manage them.
The list of books suggested by ReachOut has been vetted by the Young Adult Library Services Association, and includes topics such as abuse, depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-harm and schizophrenia.
Wanna speak your mind? The website also offers blogs and a share your story feature that allow teens to talk about their own experiences.
Check out reachout.com for more information and a complete booklist.
