No Veg, No Toy: Happy Meal Heartache?
The bill’s requirements are rigid, Time.com reports. A packaged fast food meal for children can be sold with a toy only if it meets certain nutrition guidelines. Nothing over 600 calories, 640 mg of sodium or 35 percent of calories from fat will come with a beloved plaything in the bag. The meal must also come with half a cup of fruit or three-quarters of a cup of vegetables to qualify.
A final vote must be taken, but if the bill passes, it could go into effect in December 2011. While it’s unclear whether other locales will follow suit or simply wait ‘n’ see what happens in San Fran, it’s certainly a sign that our country and our culture are moving in a new direction.
What do you think of this new law, babes? Will it help curb obesity or will kids and parents simply seek a new junk food frontier?
