Teens Protest Toxic A&F Perfume
Teens Turning Green (www.teensturninggreen.org), a group of teens working for a more sustainable world, agrees. On September 28, carrying signs and wearing surgical masks, the teens stormed a San Francisco A&F to protest the spraying of “Fierce.” But the protest wasn’t just about the super-strong scent.
Recent studies conducted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics show that 11 “trade secret” chemicals in the perfume are not listed on the ingredients label. Eight are linked with asthma, headaches and contact dermatitis. One, diethyl phthalate, has also recently been linked to male sperm damage, abnormal reproductive development in boys and behavioral problems in children.
Protesters argue that customers and passersby are being exposed to chemicals without consent or warnings about the harmful effects on human health and the environment. After complaints from nearby stores and shoppers reporting headaches, sore throats, dizziness, coughing and nausea, this particular San Fran A&F removed its air sprayers (yes, there are sprayers in the store to spread the fragrance).
With this simple change, we’re one small step closer to a cleaner environment. Teens Turning Green say enough is enough. One down, only the rest of the country to go! It’s time to stop this “toxic trespassing” for good.
Are you a fan of “Fierce?” Is this protest right on target or over the top? Let us know what you think!
