EXCLUSIVE! Dancer and actress Spencer Moss was basically born a superstar

Spencer Moss was a star as soon as she could walk and talk—but it def helped that all of her sibs were invested in the arts (i.e. stage acting, auditioning for movies, you name it). "I'm the youngest of four," she says. "So whatever they did, I wanted to do, too."

Even though Spencer followed her fam's lead, she quickly carved her own path in the world of entertainment. Thanks to a combo of hard work (Psst, she's clocking over 30 hours of dance rehearsal per week!), natural talent and, ofc, the perf pump-up playlist (SZA and Queen Bey, added to the queue), she's making a name for herself at only 13.

She shares with us her oh-so-inspiring story, her excitement about starring in the new season of DreamWorks' Dew Drop Diaries and her secret to keeping calm and carrying on.

Girls' Life: When did you start getting into dance?

Spencer Moss: Since I was born, dance was my favorite thing to do. I dance every single day, from the minute I wake up until I go to sleep. I first found my passion through tap. I did private lessons with this amazing teacher, who I still work with today, and then I started ballet, hip-hop, contemporary—the rest was history!

GL: What's your pre-performance ritual?

Spencer: I'm usually with my competition team. We all get warmed up together, we stretch, we sometimes do a meditation to get us grounded. I like listening to music. I have a whole Spotify playlist, everything from Adele to Frank Ocean to Taylor Swift. I still get nervous when I'm going to compete but having a routine definitely helps.

GL: Any advice for our readers about dealing with nervousness?

Spencer: My sister told me this when I was younger: Nerves and excitement are the same feeling in your body. It's hard because sometimes you get confused between the two of them. Whenever I get nervous before a big performance, I like to remind myself that I'm also very, very excited and take a deep breath.

GL: How did you transition into the world of acting?

Spencer: I started acting only a short time after I started dancing. My siblings all did theater, which is awesome and is what I got started doing. I wanted to be famous and on stage. I remember there was one moment, when I was super little, that I actually memorized my brother's lines—just for fun. Ever since then, my mom was like: All right, they're all acting. You're going to act, too.

GL: And now you're a voice acting pro, too! What is that like?

Spencer: I'll always remember my first time in a real recording booth. My mom took me to this whole big studio and I instantly thought: This is insane. That was when I was five or six, and I was playing JoJo on Fancy Nancy. It was an amazing experience and prepped me a lot for my role now on Dew Drop Diaries.

GL: Are you similar to your Dew Drop Diaries character, Harper?

Spencer: She kind of looks like me—brown hair and blue eyes! I love Harper because she goes on lots of adventures, she loves her family, she enjoys cooking and baking, just like me. I may be a little bit too old to watch Dew Drop Diaries, but I secretly still do because it's a really good show.

GL: Do you have a New Year's resolution for 2024?

Spencer: My new year's resolution is to focus on myself and my health. I'm a perfectionist, and I'm the kind of girl who wants everything to go my way, but I'm reminding myself that not everything needs to be perfect all the time. The energy I'm channeling for this year is to work hard—but not *too* hard—and spend time with the people I love to keep me calm.

A few fast faves from Spencer:

Fave musical artist of all time: "I literally love Lana Del Rey. I got really lucky—I just got a new dance solo for
her song "Young and Beautiful", which I listen to every single day."

Fave dance 'fit: "I love the Lulu dance studio pant—if you don't have one, you've got to get a pair. I wear them and I'm like, Oh, it's going to be a great day."

Fave T-Swift album atm: "I'm kind of in my reputation. era right now. I'm feeling those vibes for 2024."

Fave book genre: "Anything with action, especially mystery books."

Fave little treat: "On my days off, I need to start the morning with a Starbucks refresher."

Fave form of dance: "I never know what to say to this question because I love every single style!
Right now I'm into contemporary. Plus, I'm always in my hip-hop era because it's so much fun."
