These forgotten fashion trends are making a comeback in 2024

It's 2024! And some of our favorite forgotten fashion trends are re-entering the mainstream. From slim flares to fun faux fur coats, here are some comeback trends to have on your radar (and in your closet)...

Twee: Where whimsy and indie meet

@angemariono

If you're familiar with Zooey Deschanel, Alexa Chung or Tavi Gevinson, then you're probably familiar with the Twee aesthetic that took the world by storm in the early 2010s. Even Taylor Swift rocked some polka-dot peplum tops with circle skirts and oxford heels during the Speak Now era. The Twee aesthetic is characterized by whimsical patterns and accessories, rounded collars, unexpected pops of color, giant hairbows and lots (and lots!) of ruffles. And it's all coming back in a big way! Twee styles have been all over the runway this season

How to style it: You don't have to break the bank to channel your inner indie girl. Head to a fabric store for a roll of ribbon that you can DIY into big bows, or tie your hair back with 'em for a more Lana Del Rey vibe. You can also repurpose a white collared button-down by putting it *underneath* a top or dress with a quirky pattern, like a colorful plaid print. Don't be afraid to add some brightly colored knee-high socks for extra flair.

Slim flares: Bell bottoms are back, baby!

@oliveclothing

Skinny jeans had their moment, and baggy jeans already made a *huge* comeback. What's next in the world of pants? Slim flares, of course! This style was popularized in the early- and mid- 2000s and has gradually re-entered our hearts (and wardrobes!) as other Y2K trends gain popularity. Whether they're low-rise or high-rise, slim flares are a fashionable way to stay comfortable in the colder months—without sacrificing style.

How to style it: Our advice? Look for pants that are snug above the knee, and flowier (or flared) at the bottom. Keep it simple with a pair of black flared leggings, or make it pop with fun textures, like jewel-toned corduroy or velvet.

Animal style: Faux fur & wild prints

@kennedy_design_

Whether you're living in the concrete jungle or enjoying a quiet life on the homestead, you can channel your inner wild side with faux fur and animal print. It's hard to determine just when fauna-like textures first became popular (I mean, cheetah print *never* goes out of style), but we're going to start seeing even more of it this year. (If you don't believe us, even Vogue published an article earlier this year about the massive Leopard Print Revival.)

How to style it: Stay ahead of the curve with a classic cheetah print coat or sweater. You can even try some prints in non-traditional colors, like red, neon green or pink (a la Josie and the Pussycats). Faux fur accents are making a reappearance as well. So add a bit of sherpa to your wardrobe, or head to the craft store to pick out some fur that can be DIYed into the collars and sleeves of some of your favorite jackets. Just make sure it's not ~real~ fur—we can be cute and practice ethical sourcing at the same time!

Hey, that's my purse! Chunky statement bags and totes

@sammyfitz21

Your school backpack is reliable and sturdy, but when you're an off-duty student, sometimes you just want something chic for the weekend. Last year, we saw the rise of the giant beach tote. And the year before that, the mini-clutch was a hot commodity. This year, big bags are making a big comeback!

How to style it: Bold bags, statement purses and one-shoulder messenger bags are ones to keep an eye out for. You can find plenty of these styles at thrift stores and even deadstock shops. The best part? You can choose a bag that compliments your other accessories. Try pairing a long slim skirt with a big statement tote for a look that screams "chic socialite." Or go for a colorful woven purse to spice up your classic blue jeans. Pro tip: Purses usually aren't made to carry any more than a couple pounds, and messenger bags tend to distribute weight unevenly, so while they're oh-so-cute, save them for the weekend and use a backpack for school days instead. And pack light. (No heavy textbooks, pls!)
