Here's how to (very carefully) trim your own bangs

Let's be clear: If you're going in for The Bang Chop, we fully recommend seeing a professional. But if you've already taken the dive, who says you can't teach yourself to maintain them like the independent woman you are (like who has time to make it back to the salon every few weeks just to tidy up their fringe)? Here's how to do it right.

The Prep

When trimming your own bangs, ensure that you have sharp scissors that are specifically meant for cutting hair," explains hairstylist Sarah Potempa. (You can find them at your local beauty supply store.) You also want to cut your bangs when they are totally dry. So, start by styling them like you normally do so you can see how much you need to cut.

The Cut

"Hold the sheers at a 45-degree angle to avoid any harsh, blunt lines," Potempa advises. Follow the shape of your bangs to keep everything even, and do not raise your eyebrows (they might make you go too short!). "Trim a little at a time to make sure not to go too short right away." You can always cut more, but you can't add hair back!
