The beginner's guide to lipstick
Lipstick is *such* a fun way to express yourself. With so many shades, finishes and formulations to choose from, we REALLY understand how Ariel feels with all her treasures. We've got lipsticks aplenty, but who cares?! We want more.
Even though lipstick can really take your look to the next level, it's not always easy to get a flawless application, especially one that lasts. That's why we wanted to talk about everything lipstick—including how to prep your smile and choose your perf product.
1. Exfolitate and hydrate your lips
Make sure your lips are smooth before you apply. One way to do this is to scrub your lips with a sugar scrub, like this one from LUSH. Buffing off any dry skin helps ensure a smooth application. Nothing beats staying hydrated though, sis. Make sure you're getting enough water to protect your pout.
2. Prime your lips
Use a lip liner to prime your lips before applying. You can get a lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick or choose a nude color that's similar to your natural lip color. Lip liner gives the lipstick something to stick to and keeps it from running outside the lines.
3. Choose the right lipstick for you
There's so many different kinds of lipstick out there. Here's a quick breakdown of the different options:
Cream: Cream lipstick is hydrating, but isn't shiny or glowy like a lip gloss. It's closer to matte.
Matte: Matte lipsticks are typically very pigmented, which is a fancy way of saying the color pay off is real. Matte lipsticks can be really drying, though which is why step number one is so important! However, because they are more dry, they are less likely to smudge or transfer. Lip Stains: Lip stains have all the benefits of a lipstick without feeling like you have anything on your lips. Each lip stain is different and some may be more sheer while others may not be.
Liquid: Liquid lipsticks have more oil than a regular matte lipstick. The cool thing about a liquid lipstick is that it goes on as a liquid, but usually dries into a matte finish like a traditional lipstick. You typically only need one coat because these lipsticks take color srsly. Liquid lipsticks can stay on for a really long time, so if you need a product that lasts all day, look no further.
4. Don't skip the kleenex
Lightly dab your lips after applying to remove any excess. This helps prevent a smudged, messy look. It also helps press the product into your lips for a longer-lasting look.
